Our Approach to Music Education

Denton ISD's music curriculum is an in-depth comprehensive curriculum that goes beyond the basic TEKS for music.  We are a Kodaly-inspired district and are heavily influenced by Zoltan Kodaly's approach to using the native musical tongue of children to extract and teach musical elements.  In music classrooms in our district, you will see a lot of common childhood songs, folk music, regional music, and music that reflects the ethnic diversity of our classrooms.

At Paloma Creek, our instruction is also influenced by the work of Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman in the Orff-Schulwerk (school work) approach to teaching, using elemental forms of music (the most basic aspects of melody and rhythm) as building blocks to spiral students' learning.  Speech and movement play an integral role in the music-ing that happens here.

At the heart of all of this is the goal of giving our students the tools needed and the freedom to express and create.  This classroom is a place of both individual expression and community building.  We strive to make it a safe space where students are encouraged to try and fail, knowing that true beauty and understanding can come when we perservere and overcome the challenges in front of us.
