  Kindergarten

Every living soul seeks kindess, love, warmth, and safety.  If, through music, we can give the soul of the child one of these, this is enough reason for being.
- Shinichi Suzuki

Our Kindergarten music class can be best described as a "music and movement" class.  This class is all about experiencing as much music as we can in as many ways as possible.  This helps develop a excellent musical "bank" from which we draw from as we move toward music literacy.

Below is a list of some of the concepts we work on throughout the school year.

  •     In-tune singing

  •     Free movement in space

  •     Motions with songs

  •     Stepping/Skipping

  •     Steady Beat

  •     Rhythm

  •     Beat vs. Rhythm

  •     4 voices (speaking/whispering/shouting/singing)

  •     Timbre of adult singing voices

We also work very hard on our comparative concepts.  These tie in nicely with what the general classroom teachers are teaching as well.  Those concepts include:

  •     Same/Different

  •     Loud/Soft

  •     Fast/Slow

  •     Short/Long

  •     High/Low

When we finish our Kindergarten music class this year, students are ready to jump into 1st Grade music and start learning to read and write music themselves!
